FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Mastering is a technical and creative process which is the last step in preparing music for release. It can include analog and digital processes like equalization, compression, limiting and leveling. It has never been more vital to have your music properly mastered. Proper mastering maintains and enhances the integrity of the music you have recorded, produced and mixed. Mastering enables your release to playback well on any system. Mastering also ensures your music meets the standards set forth by streaming and other release formats, so the sound and level of your music is competitive and not deficient when compared to other current releases in similar genres to yours.

Standard mastering is usually preformed on a stereo mixed track. Sometimes under certain circumstances it is preferable for the mastering engineer to use multiple stems instead a fixed stereo track. In the simplest form, stem mastering could be a music stem and a vocal stem so the mastering engineer can ensure the final balance is correct. It is more time consuming and potentially more costly but in situations where the mix is compromised it can be a vital option to insure the best possible result can be achieved.

Mixing essentially is the art of “balancing” multiple tracks of audio so it ultimately represents the artistic vision of the artist and producer, but also meets engineering standards that include setting correct levels, equalization and dynamic controls so each track, instrument or vocal recording can be heard clearly and distinctly when the complete mix is played back to everyone’s satisfaction.

Most music is released in stereo. A left and right channel of audio that has come to be the standard for enjoying and listening to music. Over the years quite a few “Immersive” formats have come along. Quad, Surround Sound, 5.1 and now Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 have entered the race. To be considered immersive, music is mixed or remixed so instead of just coming out of two speakers it comes out of many speakers giving the listener the opportunity of hearing music in an environment that more easily can reproduce the ambience of a studio, live performance venue, concert hall or arena.

Yes, we all need to be concerned that is the right level to be properly streamed. If it’s too loud the software codecs the streaming services use will turn it down. If it’s too soft or dynamic the codec will turn it up or limit the dynamic range. Anytime any codec does anything it degrades the sound quality noticeably. We work hard to make sure all our master’s do not get turned up or down. We aim to be right in the center of the sweet spot for level, so it is not too hot and not too quiet or dynamic.
